The higher frequency of processor, better?

2023-03-16

The unit of CPU operating frequency is measured in Hz (Hertz). With development of science and technology, CPU manufacturing process has become more and more perfect, and its main frequency has also improved greatly. Nowadays, although unit of Hz (hertz) of processor's fundamental frequency has not changed, we often add an M or even G in front of unit, which we often refer to as MHz (megahertz) and GHz (gigahertz) fundamental frequency.

Remember, how often do we encounter this scene: Xiao Ming asks Lao Wang, how is your computer configuration? CPU frequency of this computer is 3.0G. But what does this main computer processor frequency of 3.0G mean?

The higher frequency of processor, better?

CPU main frequency

The so-called main CPU frequency refers to operating frequency of CPU, that is, frequency at which CPU performs calculations.

To give a very simple example, if we can walk 100 steps per minute, then our cadence is 100 steps per minute. The same principle applies to CPU.

However, unit of CPU operating frequency is measured in Hz (Hertz). With development of technology, CPU manufacturing process is getting more and more perfect, and its main frequency is also greatly improved. Nowadays, although unit of Hz (hertz) of processor's fundamental frequency has not changed, we often add an M or even G in front of unit, which we often refer to as MHz (megahertz) and GHz (gigahertz) fundamental frequency.

Hz (hertz), MHz (megahertz) and GHz (gigahertz) are converted as follows: 1 kHz = 1000 Hz, 1 MHz = 1000 kHz, 1000 MHz = 1 GHz. Modern processors mostly express fundamental frequency in gigahertz.

Remembering first computer, root of grass is still fresh in my memory. The CPU is single-core with a main frequency of 266 MHz. Today, computers used at grassroots level have 4 cores and 8 threads with a main frequency of 3.4 GHz. In less than 20 years, fundamental frequency has increased by almost 13 times, which is indeed Moore's law, and performance of equipment will double every 18-20 months.

After main frequency of processor is increased to 3.0G, it gradually encounters a bottleneck. At present, only a few high-end processors can increase main frequency above 4G under normal working conditions, and rest mostly fluctuate between 2.5~3.5G, or increase number of cores, or improve cache, or improve process.

By way, we have one more question. Since CPU base frequency refers to frequency at which CPU runs, higher CPU base frequency, better?

Not really necessary, take people walking as an example, Xiao Ming walks at 100 steps per minute and Pharaoh walks at 80 steps per minute, so can Xiao Ming walk more in one minute than Pharaoh? She is a ladybug who is afraid of any nonsense when walking, and distance between each step is 50 cm. And Lao Wang is a strong uncle who picks every step

The distance is 75cm. Let's calculate, Xiao Ming: 100 steps x 50cm = 5000cm. And Pharaoh: 100 steps x 75cm = 7500cm. Obviously, within 1 minute, Pharaoh went further than Xiaoming.

Speaking of this, you should understand that higher base frequency of CPU, higher frequency, and also depends on other technical parameters of CPU, such as CPU cache, number of cores, manufacturing process, and instruction set. They will be described in detail in relevant articles. And we can only say that, other things being equal, parameters of processor, higher frequency of processor, better performance.
