Why do most servers still use mechanical hard drives instead of solid state drives?
At present, solid-state hard drives have basically become standard configuration. Compared to solid state hard drives, mechanical hard drives have performance bottlenecks related to read and write speeds. The current newly installed users on opposite side mainly use a single SSD hard drive, while users with higher capacity requirements will consider a dual SSD + mechanical hard drive solution. But servers still use mechanical hard drives and few users will consider SSDs. So why do most servers still use mechanical hard drives instead of solid state drives?

Reason 1: Hard drive capacity
We know that while SSDs can be several blocks faster than mechanical HDDs and overcome performance bottleneck, SSD storage capacity is not as good as mechanical HDDs. at same price.Currently, capacity of mainstream SSDs is only 120GB and 240G. HDDs also have large capacities, but are very expensive. Servers store important large amounts of data and have high requirements for hard disk capacity. Generally, a server mechanical hard disk can have a single block capacity of more than 2 TB, and a main high-capacity server mechanical hard disk has reached about 10 TB or even more.
Reason 2: Price difference
Conventional solid state hard drives are much more expensive than mechanical hard drives. Although SSD manufacturers have also released enterprise grade SSDs, they are more expensive. If all servers use SSDs, cost will be very high, which is not affordable for ordinary enterprises.

Reason Three: Data Security
As we all know, data on a server is priceless. In words of industry, "the hard drive has a price, but data is priceless." Data loss will result in incalculable losses. We know that if a mechanical hard drive is damaged, we can recover important data with professional data recovery. However, since SSDs are chip-level storage, if hard drive is damaged and data is lost, data will be difficult to recover. In addition to capacity, this also reflects biggest advantage of mechanical hard drives.

But nowadays, many servers have adopted solid state + mechanical hard disk solution. Like home computers, solid state hard disk is used as system disk, and mechanical hard disk is used as storage to ensure speed, capacity, and security.
