USB Naming Convention Update USB3.0 and USB3.1 will be collectively referred to as USB3.2.
According to latest USB naming convention announced by USB-IF, original USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 will no longer be named, and all USB standards will be referred to as USB 3.2. Of course, considering compatibility, USB 3.0 to USB 3.2 They are called USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, respectively.

The new USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is so named because it uses all top and bottom data pins to double data transfer rate. So, when will USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 devices be available?
USB-IF has announced that a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 controller will be released later in 2019, meaning consumers will be able to use latest standard on desktops during this year. In other words, consumers can use it on existing devices by purchasing peripherals that support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standard.
Because of big names of USB connectors and standards, including USB 3.0 and USB 3.1, after merging, everyone will theoretically call them USB 3.1. For example, after release of USB 3.1 in July 2013, USB-IF named all USB 3.X USB 3.1, including USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.1 Gen 2. Now that USB 3.2 has been running for some time now, USB-IF is going to make something new, namely to reunite USB 3.X series.
