How do I know what is maximum amount of memory my computer can support?
I bought a computer and my friends said memory could be replaced. A computer with a lot of memory is fast, but I'm new to computers. I don't know how to check computer memory. If I change memory, how much should I change? How to check maximum memory supported by computer? Let me share a method for checking maximum memory of your computer, remember truth, hardware + operating system = determine maximum supported memory.
1. Open Start menu and click Run button.
2. Type "CMD" in pop-up window and then confirm or press Enter key.
3. Type "wmic memphysical get maxcapacity" in command window and press Enter key.
4. The computer will then output a string of numbers in kilobytes. Let's convert this string of numbers to our common unit of measure, GB.
Conversion method: "Resulting number/(divided by) 1024/(divided by) 1024"
As shown in picture: My computer receives a string of numbers that is 33554432 KB, then I divide by 1024, and then I divide by 1024, which is 32 GB. In other words, my computer hardware and system I have installed support a maximum of 32 GB of memory.
Notes:
1. Different operating systems and different motherboards, so maximum amount of memory they support is also different
2. Win 32-bit system can support up to 3.25 GB of memory, no matter what size your motherboard supports, but 32-bit system can only support up to 3.25 GB of memory
3. If installed memory is over 4 GB or only 4 GB, install a 64-bit operating system to get more memory support and improve processing speed of your personal PC.
