Sri Lanka, a beautiful island in Indian Ocean, is also known for its diverse culture and rich history. Sinhala is official language of Sri Lanka, and it has witnessed significant developments in field of technology, particularly computers.
The roots of computer history in Sri Lanka can be traced back to 1970s when country's economy was expanding rapidly. The country's first computer was installed in 1971 at University of Colombo. The computer was an IBM 360/30, which was a huge leap forward in field of computing.
Over next few years, demand for computer science education grew rapidly, and several universities across country introduced computer science programs. The University of Moratuwa, in particular, played a vital role in computer history in Sri Lanka. It was first university in country to teach computer science as a degree course.
The University of Moratuwa also played an essential role in developing computer systems that were relevant to country's needs. In 1984, university introduced a computer system that was specifically designed for Sinhala typing, making it easier for people to type in their native language. The system was a significant development for country, as it helped in promotion of Sinhala language and made it easier for people to communicate in their native language.
In 1990s, country witnessed a significant shift in use of computers. With introduction of internet, computers became more accessible to general public. The Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) introduced internet service in 1995, and it opened up a whole new world of opportunities for Sri Lankans. People could now easily connect with their friends and family living abroad and access information from across globe.
The internet also played a crucial role in development of e-commerce in Sri Lanka. With introduction of e-commerce, people could now buy and sell goods and services online, making it easier for businesses to reach customers across country.
Today, computers have become an integral part of Sri Lankan society. People use computers for education, business, entertainment, and communication. Several schools in country have introduced computer education programs, ensuring that next generation of Sri Lankans is well-equipped to face challenges of digital age.
In conclusion, computer history in Sinhala is an essential part of Sri Lanka's technological development. From country's first computer installation to development of Sinhala typing software and introduction of internet, Sri Lanka has come a long way in field of computing. Today, computers are an integral part of Sri Lankan society, and they play a crucial role in country's economic and social development.
